TOURS IN ZANZIBAR

PRISON ISLAND

A relaxing day in Zanzibar Channel of the Indian Ocean is achieved when we visit the small isle off the Western Coast of Zanzibar. This half day guided tour begins and ends at your hotel. This historical Island was formerly owned by an Arab and used for the confinement of refractory slaves. It was bought by General Mathews and the jail (goal) which still stands was built in 1893 and hence the name "PRISON ISLAND" One time it was infectors quarantine station for East African Territory. Today Prison Island is one of the Tourist Resort . There is new Constructing Hotel and also bar and restaurant which serves Tourist, At the Prison Island you will see GIANT TORTOISES, and be able to swim, sunbathe and snorkel.

PRISON ISLAND & SANDBANK (Excursion time: from 9.30 am till 3.30 pm)

We ensure you a relaxing daily Island excursion. Leaving from Forodhani Garden for Prison Island, locally known as Changuu Island we visit the old slave prison ruins and the Aldabra’s giant tortoise, once property of the Sultan Said Majid.

We will have time to play with starfish at the beach then setting again with Swahili dhows to Pange Island (Sandbank). On the way we serve breakfast with ginger spiced tea and juices, home made bread and tropical fruit.

Enjoy this nowhere island, covered twice a day by high tide,  an astonishing white surrounded by crystalline water, the ideal trip to relax and practice snorkeling to discover  treasures of Indian Ocean. On the sandbank we offer a variety of local fruits, beverages and snacks and later we will serve a lunch buffet of Swahili cuisine, Italian cheese, soft drinks and white wine.

BUSH TOUR

Coconut Palms, Thatching, Baskets, Weaving, pottery, Grinding Millets, rice, Coconut Rope Making, Coconut Palm Climbing, Local Cuisine Cooking, Zanzibar Aroma and Incense, Construction of local Homes, Bread Making, Spices, Banana Plantations, Seasonal Fruits, Local Koran Schools, Local Traditional Music/Songs and Dancers. The four-hour guided tour begins and ends at your hotel where you will be driven to FUONI on outskirts of Zanzibar Town.

Here you will .be able to see while walking through the farm village and capitalizing on the village life of the locals who are always busy carrying on with their daily activities like: grinding millets with mortar pestles; thatching coconut palms; preparation of bread for evening meal - guests are welcome to taste -, we move further to see locals climbing Coconut Palm Tree guests to try it out; coconut products madafu milk; baskets; rope; poles coconut palm caps. Further a field cassava plantation and bananas with their various products can be seen and tasted cassava weaving of baskets, floor mats, brooms, food covers etc. Koran Schools will also be visited. We proceed to the last stop to be welcomed by drumbeats where gusts are requested to participate with refreshments of fruits of the season and mineral water.

SAFARI BLUE

“N othing short of AWESOME – a “must do” in Zanzibar ” Gavin S Africa

Safari Blue has been running great days out in Zanzibar since 1996. Safari Blue starts from Fumba village, south west of Stone Town. Fumba is the most convenient location for exploring the wildlife, isolated sandbanks and rugged island scenery of the Menai Bay Conservation Area

Safari Blue is a full day boat trip in traditional hand built sailing dhows finished to the very highest standards of comfort and safety. DOLPHIN TOUR

This is Full Day Tour, the main Attraction being able to swim close to the dolphin, actually its swimming with the Dolphin. Being very social themselves, if you are luck you even get to play with them. Situated on the southern point of the island, Kizimkazi fishing village is home to several schools of bottle-nosed dolphins and Humpback dolphins, which are sighted following a short boat trip from the village.

Kizimkazi is also the site of a 12th century mosque, the earliest evidence of Islam in East Africa, and is thus worth a visit for both natural and cultural reasons. The trip includes transport from either Stone Town or Hotel in the East or North Coast, guide, boat, snorkeling equipment and lunch.

JOZANI FOREST

This guided tour of three hours will take you to Jozani natural forest (it is only a natural forest in Zanzibar); where is home for rare red colobus monkeys which are species rare in the World. The smaller trees and shrubs make several sub canopies under the highest canopy. You will walk through the nature trail of the forest, which is a habitat for many species of animals.

MANGAPWANI TOUR

Slave Chambers: Built around 1880 from the cave and connected to the seaside 2kms away, the area is surrounded by varieties of indigenous trees such as Breadfruit, Ramboutants and scent shrubs. It was an important transit point for the captured slaves to be sold to the outside world at the time of the abolishment of slavery in 1873. Between 1880-1905, the chamber was being used as a place of concealment of the human cargo pending their disposal. A utilized as the hideout by the Arabs for their human cargo ready for shipment. The four hour guided tour begins and ends at your hotel. Mangapwani ("Arab Shore") lies in a district where many Arabs used to live. In the village there is a Police Station, also a large government "Bungalow" which was built by the Arabs who originally owned Prison Island. Newly opened Serena Restaurant is nearby the Slave Caves. Swimming, Sun bathing may be done widely.

SPICE TOUR

Tropical fruits, spices and other rare species of plants are among the different vegetation to be seen in this guided tour. It is not only a tour but a rare experience to prove out why Zanzibar is referred to as the “Spice Island”. This Three hours guided tour begins and end up at your hotel via Kidichi Village, to view the Persian Baths built in 1850 by Seyyid Said bin Sultan (first Sultan of Zanzibar) for his wife Princess Shehrzard (grand daughter of Fateh Ali Shah of Persia).

At Kizimbani Village you will visit Spice Farms to see smell and test varieties of Tropical fruits & Spices. STONE TOWN TOUR

The three - hours guided tour begins and end up at your hotel where you will walk/driven to the city market (opened 1904). Here you will be able to see and buy, tropical fruits and spices (if you wish). You will also feel the pulse of Zanzibar and hear different dialects being spoken by the people at the market. From there we proceed to the Anglican Church of Christ built by Bishop Steers in 1874 on the site of old slave market. You will see tiny and dingy room where slaves were kept (Slave Chambers) before reaching the auction table in the Old slave market. You will then be driven or walk (optional) to National Museum of Zanzibar (opened 1925) to see many interesting relics from the time of the Sultans and the early Explores. CHUMBE ISLAND CORAL PARK

The trip in a motorised boat will take you to the secluded island of Chumbe which manages nature a reserve, with forest and marine nature trails, one kilometre of totally protected and untouched reef, a historic lighthouse (built in 1904) and an old mosque. The biggest attractions of the island is the peaceful and natural environment. You will journey through the special nature trails passing a tunnel of fascinating indigenous undergrowth, listening to birds and small animals going about their uninterrupted business. More than 40 species of birds have been identified on the island, including the endangered Roseate Tern. Snorkelling in the Reef Sanctuary is amazing; an uninterrupted coral garden stretches right from the shallow beach to a drop-off to about 16 metres deep, teeming with thousands of colourful fish belonging to 370 families, which is among the highest diversity found anywhere along the East African Coast. Turtles and dolphins regularly visit the reef, and spiny lobsters peed out of their hostels confident that nobody will hunt for them, and you may even seen a huge grouper living only a few metres under the surface on the drop-off.

PRINCESS SALME SPICE TOUR

We start our tour at the birthplace of princess Salme; Mtoni Palace Ruins. Here we go on a detailed tour around the Persian baths, the main palace and its botanical gardens. From Princess Salme’s birthplace we enjoy a 20 minute boat ride to Bububu where we enjoy a traditional coffee ceremony with Kashata, Halua and dates on the terrace of a beautiful Omani house which once belonged to the nephew of Sultan Said. (Salme’s father). Here it is said that Salme rested on her way to her Kidichi and Kizimbani plantations. We take a stroll around the lush gardens and the impressive ruins. After our coffee ceremony, we travel to Kidichi by Donkey Cart like Princess Salme used to. We visit the spice plantations to go on a detailed spice tour at Mzee Yussuf’s private spice farm. On this plantation stand the ruins of an old rest house which belonged to Sultan Majid (Salme’s brother) who later sold it to Mzee Yussuf’s grand grand father .

Mzee Yussuf’s wife will prepare traditional Pilau, fish masala, roast beef, stewed bananas, kachumbari salad, several vegetarian dishes, an array of fruits, fresh fruit juice and his famous spice tea. This special lunch is taken in Mzee Yussuf’s house and his plantation is overlooking the Indian Ocean and even Stone Town! (Highest point in Zanzibar)

After lunch we visit the Persian baths in Kidichi which were built for Sultan Said’s second wife Binti Irich Mirza (Sheherazade), who was the daughter of the Persian Shah. We now head back to Mtoni Marine by minibus enjoying the sights of Kidichi. Mzee Majid’s Resthouse

NUNGWI VILLAGE CULTURAL TOUR(FULL DAY TOUR)

Nungwi is a village to the north coast of Zanzibar a home of famous dhow building in Zanzibar which is the cultural attraction of Zanzibar, since centuries the locals are building these woods curved boats with simply local tools.

You will visit one of the local houses and see how people are living, further more you will visit the local fishermen and fish market.

At Nungwi you will also visit the Sea turtle Project initiated by Eco & Culture as one of our ecological project. Sea turtles are endangered species world-wide, especial in Zanzibar sea turtles are widely extinct; this protection project raises sea turtles in a natural lagoon, in this aquarium sea turtles are bred.

After tour you will have some time to relax at the beach. This day trip price includes a guide, transport from your hotel and entrance fees, there are many restaurants around there where you can choose for lunch (not included in the trip price) .

ZANZIBAR CULTURAL TOUR (TOWN AREA)-(FULL DAY TOUR)

This is a cultural visit to the whole town of Zanzibar(not only Stone town),we start visiting Mwanakwerekwe markets where you will see the local people’s daily activities, farmers from every corner of the Island bringing their products for sell, and you will also hear different dialects.

Then we will drive to Stone town of Zanzibar where you will have a opportunity to see other local people in their daily activities as well, starting with former slave market, the House of Wonders and some narrow streets and lastly at the Old Market, here we will buy different items as per your preference for your lunch and then drive to one of a local house for the lunch preparation where you can also learn how to cook the local meals.

When the lunch is ready, we will have our lunch and later on we transfer you to respective hotels.

SUNSET CRUISE (Excursion time: from 5.00pm till sunset)

Driven from your hotel to stone town, at 16:30 embark the dhow, sailing around the island surrounding Stone while having drinks (beer, lemonade, wine and bites) on board, sailing around, listening the wind while taking pictures of sun goes down. Sail back to the shore where your van will be waiting to take you back to your hotel
